Lower Back and Leg Pain
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is pain, burning, weakness, numbness, and/or tingling in the lower back and/or legs due to one of these factors or a combination of: pressure on the sciatic nerve, inflammation to the sciatic nerve (or the area directly surrounding the nerve), an irritation to the sciatic nerve, or a pinching of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body — it actually consists of 5 nerves. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back (lumbar spine), runs down into the buttocks, down the leg, and into the toes.
Sciatica is a very common problem that affects many people on a daily basis. Its effects can range from mildly bothering to a debilitating pain that interferes with your daily life. In over 20 years of practice, I have been able to successfully treat sciatica, helping my patients get rid of back and leg pain safely, naturally, and permanently — without the use of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic care is a proven way to effectively treat and eliminate sciatic nerve pain. Too often, when dealing with sciatica, people use pain medications, injections, therapy, or even surgery only to find that the initial pain relief they experienced went away and their sciatica came back — sometimes even worse! This is because these treatments were dealing with your pain symptoms and not correcting the underlying cause of your problem. Until the root cause of your sciatica is corrected, the pain will keep coming back.
Sciatic Pain is Experienced Many Different Ways
- Lower back pain
- Leg Pain
- Buttock pain
- Sensation of tingling or “Pins & Needles” running down your leg, and even into your toes
- Numbness in your legs or feet
- Muscle weakness in your legs
- Aching or burning feeling in your legs
- Pain or numbness in your big toe, or any of your toes
- Any combination of the list above
As you can see, while some people may experience sciatic pain radiating from the lower back all the way to their feet, for others it can be isolated to just a segment of that area. Either way, chiropractic is often the most effective way to deal with sciatica for long term correction of the problem and not simply a quick fix.
Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica pain can be felt immediately in the case of an accident or injury, and in other cases it might take years before you feel the pain. Some people experience sciatic pain that appears to come and go. This is because only 10% of your nervous system feels pain. So, sometimes you feel relief from the pain, but since the underlying cause of your sciatica has not been corrected the pain will come back.
Here is a list of some of the potential causes of sciatic pain.
- Subluxation or misalignment of the vertebrae (spine)
- Disc degeneration, herniation, bulge, protrusion or other damage
- Tumor pressing on the sciatic nerve
- Injury to muscles
- Slipping, falling, or other impacts
- Internal bleeding
- Bad posture (either sitting, standing or sleeping)
- Spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal the sciatic nerves pass through)
- Playing sports
- Poor lifting techniques
- Other normal daily activities
While there are many potential causes for sciatica, the most common is a subluxation (misalignment of the vertebrae) in the lumbar spine (lower back). Leaving a subluxation untreated will result in the degeneration of the spine, which leads to disc degeneration, disc protrusions, herniations, and at some point osteoarthritis. At World Class Chiropractic, we will gently correct for subluxations in your spine allowing your nervous system to perform at an optimal level so that true healing can occur.
The sciatic nerves are responsible for controlling and regulating the reproductive organs, digestive system, muscles of the lower body and legs, and much more. Leaving sciatica uncorrected can lead to physical problems including:
- Difficulty getting pregnant
- Digestion Problems
- Edema or leg swelling
- Erectile dysfunction (ED)
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Menstrual problems
- Urinary problems
- And more
As you can see, leaving sciatica untreated for any length of time will be detrimental to your health — and the problem will grow worse over time. When you are experiencing pain, it is your body warning you that something is wrong and needs to be corrected. Taking NSAIDs and other pain medications to deal with your sciatic pain will NOT correct your sciatica, it will simply mask the pain for a limited period of time while your real problem gets worse.
Chiropractic Care and Sciatica
Last year The European Spine Journal published the findings from a clinical trial demonstrating that chiropractic adjustments resulted in a 72% success rate in treating sciatica and related symptoms compared to a 20% success from physical therapy, and a 50% success rate from corticosteroid injections.
